First Annual Membership Meeting
Written by Justin Herreman
Thursday, 17 November 2011

This year has been a year of several firsts for the Black Hills Paddlers.  We held our first annual Trails Day Paddle, our first annual Halloween Paddle and now seizing that momentum we are going to become more organized as a club and hold our first annual Christmas Party and Club meeting.

Here’s the beta on this event:

What: an organizational meeting that includes food and beverage to elect actual officers, plan events for the upcoming year & make some new friends!

Where: The Sports Rock Bar & Grill

When: Saturday December 3rd at 6PM.  The meeting will run until 7:30 so we can all then head to the pool session @ the Rapid City Aquatics Center.

Why: Win a door prize (Yup Nancy has scored some serious schwag to draw for), get your name on the roster, order your t-shirt, drink beer!

Agenda: Yup we have one, here it is!

#1) Fill 5 key Board Positions for the year, these positions are:

a)      Secretary - Treasurer – This individual keeps track of our funds (yes we have a bank account & it has actual money in it!), take notes of meetings and makes them available for people, keeps the passwords to the website and mailing list.

b)      Social Organizer / Webmaster – This individual is in charge of cat herding (okay kayaker wrangling, same darn thing) and making sure people know of upcoming events.  This person sends the quarterly newsletter out (yup we are doing one of those) and the pool session notices.

c)      Media Liaison / Marketing Director – The person coordinates press releases, notices and flyers for events and getting the word out about our club and all the cool things we do, are doing (say let people know about the paddling guide that is getting published in March’ish)

d)     Membership Manager -  This individual is the keeper of the keys for the club, the head honcho, the big boss, the one who does whatever is left to be done J

e)      Schwag Master – This individual is responsible for procuring cool provisions like t-shirts, hats, and stickers.  We intend to have an annual or bi-annual t-shirt.

#2) Event Planning for the year – we intend the have the following events in 2012.  Each event will need an event director to plan and coordinate the event.

a)      Spring Seminar – A cool get together planned for the new Outdoor campus where we can all get together, talk about boating, learn a few things and invite the public.  This will be a GREAT marketing and membership tool.  It even could be fun!

b)      Trails Day Paddle – On National Trails Day.  Last year’s event was a HUGE success and we’d love to make this years even better!

c)      The Fat Tire Festival – For those that are not at the Fat Tire Festival or whipping East River Butt at the SDKayakChallenge we have a free booth space at the fat tire festival, we could sell t-shirts, the paddling guide and stickers or beverages? Ideas?

d)     Hills Alive Fund Raiser – We are thinking of selling beverages or something of that sort at Hills Alive as a way to put some money in the club treasury.

e)      A Trip – A cool paddling trip somewhere this summer, Yellowstone, The Green River, the Shoshone River, this could be FUN!

f)       A Raffler – This isn’t a required event but a nice kayak raffle has the potential to make us some serious money for the club treasury.  Anybody in?

g)      Halloween Paddle – This was a great success this year and we’d love to see 40 boats and 200 kids next year.  Thanks Nancy & Paulette for all their hard work

h)      Annual Meeting – Do the same thing all over again in 2012.

Other important details… Barb @ Global Market and Dillion at Basecamp are offering a 10% discount to all Black Hills Paddlers members in 2012.  If you need some new gear this is a GREAT reason to attend this event.

We will see you there!

 -Justin

P.S. Please pass this around to anybody who might be interested in joining!

to paddle by 2:15.  We will paddle en-mass to the island to trick or
treat with the kids at 2:30.  After the event everyone will be heading
downtown to Thirsty's for a beverage and social time.

Kids meet at the main parking lot and get ready to scramble for candy at 2:30.

We have some GREAT sponsors that have donated prizes for the child under 13 with the best costume and the paddler with the best costume.

THANKS TO GLOBAL MARKET FOR SPONSORING THIS!  THANKS TO NANCY & PAULETTE FOR ORGANIZING!!

2011 - 2012 Pool Session Schedule!
Written by Justin Herreman
Tuesday, 11 October 2011

The Rapid City Swim Center has agreed to once again host some pool sessions this winter.  We are doing this on the first Saturday of the month from 8PM to 10PM.

You are welcome to arrive 15 minutes early to get your gear unloaded and get dressed so we are in the pool by 8:00.  Cost for the Novermber and December sessions is 7.50 and the sessions in 2012 is $10.00.

Please get a wristband and pay at the front desk then drive around back and unload your gear.  Remember to please clean your gear and boats, no floaties in the pool!

Dates for this year's pool sessions are
November 5, 2011
December 3, 2011
January 7, 2012
February 4, 2012
March 10, 2012

Thanks to Barb Limbo & Chad Andrew for making this happen!

We will be having a social gathering after the pool sessions at Thirsty's as well, this is a great time to meet new paddlers and connect with old friends!

AS always, BYOB (Clean ones!) & safety gear.  This includes a helmet!
Call Barb @ Global Market 343 4051 to rent. Pool Special: $10.00 for all to $1 for a helmet.
(Please:  Tell Barb what you want the boat for.  Practicing rolling is not “just paddling around.”)

Call Kelly at 484-4074 or Justin at 390-3010 for questions about the RC Swim Center dates.

See you at the pool!
